Dallas Harlequins hosted the undefeated Austin Valkyries in the last home match the season last Saturday, April 8th. Austin Valkyries proved to be a formidable opponent, snapping a 5-game win streak and showing the Harlequins that there are still improvements to be made if they want to dominate the Red River Rugby Conference (RRRC).

Austin dominated Dallas 74-0 with the Woman of the Match going to Dallas’ Jacey Cardwell, a very deserving seasoned veteran who consistently produces for Dallas. Playing time was seen in the second half by Shreveport’s Stephanie LaFave, coming in as flanker.

There was a second, B side game that proved very valuable and exciting for our developing Shreveport players! Shreveport brought 6 players to integrate with the Dallas Harlequins for the B side game, and everyone played the entire match. Seasoned players Nancy Campbell and Stephanie LaFave were positioned at eight man and scrumhalf, respectively.

Rookies Leigha Clayton-Cornell started as lock, Emma Lisle as center, Emily Murphy as wing and Rocio Cortes as fullback. Currently the Austin Valkyrie B-side team competes in D2 of the RRRC and is the standings leader, full of experienced players who have competed at a national level. Our motely side composed of plenty of freshly minted ruggers gave them a run with a final score of 36-5, the lone try produced by Dallas player Maria Acosta.

Shreveport rookies brought their best and represented Shreveport Women’s Rugby well, with a tough call counting against Dallas on a supposed try by Emily Murphy plus plenty of tackles made by Leigha and Rocio and excellent breakaway plays by Emma Lisle. Emma’s play was recognized with Woman of the Match honors.

There is one game left in regular season play, April 22nd, Dallas Harlequins take on the Little Rock Stormers in Little Rock this time. There is a tentative B-side game that Shreveport will be contributing players to as well.

Shreveport Women’s Rugby welcomes players of all ages, sizes and experience levels to come out and practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30PM at AC Steere Park. Follow us on Facebook and stay updated as we gear up for summer 7’s season, details to come!
